nbn helps meet the need for speed
In a digitally connected world where access to fast broadband speed is becoming increasingly important, 75 per cent of Australians connected to the nbn® Fixed Line network will be able to access a plan based on nbn’s Home Ultrafast service, by the end of next year.
During the construction of the nbn® network, we mandated the delivery of Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) for all new housing and business development precincts so there are already around 2 million premises across Australia that can access plans based on peak wholesale download speeds of close to 1 Gbps.
And over the last two years, we have been quietly upgrading the capabilities of the Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) network, to the extent that more than 95 per cent of the 2.5 million premises that can currently access HFC, or approximately 2.4 million premises, are now eligible to order plans based on nbn® Home Ultrafast.
Across our FTTP and HFC technologies, that adds up to more than 4.4 million premises.
As part of nbn’s $4.5 billion network upgrade program, we have announced the suburbs and towns across Australia where up to 1.6 million premises currently served by Fibre to the Node (FTTN) will become eligible to upgrade to FTTP by ordering an eligible high speed tier. That will grow to an identified footprint of around 2 million premises.
We are now inviting customers living and working in around 50,000 premises currently served by FTTN to upgrade to FTTP by placing an order with a participating internet retailer for a plan based on nbn® Home Fast (which is based on peak wholesale download speeds of up to 100 Mbps) or higher2.

This is a great leap forward, which will become available for an increasing number of customers.
When eligible customers order a plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier, we will replace the existing copper lead-in with a fibre lead-in.
We are scheduled to add approximately 60,000 FTTN premises per month, on average, across Australia, enabling them to order a plan based on nbn® Home Ultrafast, a number that will steadily rise to 2 million by the end of next year.
We live in an increasingly connected world, one characterised by households bursting with multiple digital devices, remote working from home and massively popular leisure activities, such as online gaming and video streaming, all competing for the same online bandwidth.
Access to the right speed to meet your needs has never been more important.
And we are not done yet.
So, how are we achieving this?
By driving fibre deeper into communities.
Today, we can also confirm a significant number of additional suburbs and towns where some premises will also become eligible for upgrades from FTTN to FTTP, providing access to faster speed plans by the end of 2023.
These suburbs and towns were included in initial scoping but have been subject to specific survey, design and construction works before we could confirm they would be included in the network upgrades.

Later this year, we will enable eligible customers that are connected to the nbn® network via Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) to order a plan based on nbn® Home Superfast (which is based on peak wholesale download speeds of up to 250 Mbps) or higher2 to also upgrade to FTTP.
By increasing access to our highest wholesale speed tiers for those who want them, we are clearing the way for more people in Australia to experience and enjoy the power and capability of the nbn® FTTP network.

As the digital backbone of the nation, we are committed to upgrading and evolving the nbn® network to meet the digital needs of Australia now and into the future.
1 Regardless of the retail service you purchase, the actual wholesale speeds delivered by nbn™ Home Ultrafast will be less than 1Gbps due to equipment and network limitations. In addition, the HFC Home Ultrafast bandwidth profile downstream service provided to retail providers is a ranged profile with a maximum sustained information rate of 750Mbps. Reference to speeds are not end user speeds; they are wholesale layer 2 peak information rate bandwidth provided to retail providers. An end customer’s experience, including the speeds actually achieved over the nbn® broadband access network, depends on the nbn® access network technology and configuration over which services are delivered to their premises, whether they are using the internet during the busy period, and some factors outside of NBN Co’s control (like their equipment quality, software, chosen broadband plan, signal reception, or how their provider designs its network).
2 Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply – please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria includes, among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises (e.g. standalone premises or Single Dwelling Unit (SDU)) and placing an order for an nbn® powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.
3 NBN Co reserves the right to amend the list of targeted suburbs and towns for the local fibre network build at its discretion if circumstances change and if absolutely necessary.
