INTERVIEW TIPS

Making the most of your interview

A little research goes a long way

The best thing you can do for any interview is to come prepared. Take the time to research the company, job and business unit.

Explore your talents

Think about the personal skills and attributes that make you the right fit for the role. When you’re done, align these examples with the requirements of the position. This will allow you to confidently and concisely articulate your suitability to the role.

Have a handful of questions up your sleeve

Your interview shouldn’t be one-sided – it’s an opportunity for you to learn more about our organisation and the role you’ve applied for. By asking informed questions you’re giving yourself the key information you need to make the right career decisions, while demonstrating your interest in the position.

Make your first impression count

One of the best first impressions you can make is also one of the easiest – arriving on time. Reduce the pressure before your interview by planning ahead and giving yourself plenty of travel time.

Practice makes perfect

An interview isn’t about memorising information or going in with a rehearsed speech, but it helps to consider your answers prior to your meeting. This is particularly useful if you have a lot of information to relay.

Behavioural interviewing

Behavioural interviewing is based on the idea that the past is the best predictor of the future – you’ll be asked for specific examples of past situations that demonstrate your competency. For example, you may encounter a question similar to this: “Tell me about a time you solved a complex business problem?”

Use the ‘STAR’ technique to best answer or describe a specific situation that demonstrates your competence in that area:

This allows you to succinctly demonstrate how you’ve previously solved a complex business problem while ensuring the interviewer remains engaged in the discussion. If the interviewer wants to know something that wasn’t covered in your response, they may ask a follow up question to obtain more detail around the ‘How?’ and ‘Why?’ of your example.

If you have any questions during the interview process, feel free to contact your recruitment representative at any time.
