Three-year contract extension for NBN Co Chief Executive Officer

01 September 2023

The Board of NBN Co, the company that runs Australia’s wholesale broadband network, today announced that Mr Stephen Rue will continue as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for a further three years. Mr Rue was originally appointed as CEO on 1 September 2018 for an initial five-year term.

NBN Co Chair Kate McKenzie said:

“I’m delighted that Stephen has agreed to continue as the Chief Executive Officer at NBN Co.

“Under his leadership, the company completed the initial build of the network on time in 2020, and with over 8.5m homes and businesses connected to the network, has now successfully transitioned to the operational phase. Significant progress is being made in upgrading the network, increasing the availability of higher speeds and providing greater capacity and reliability.

“This contract extension ensures the company benefits from Stephen’s experience and trusted leadership as NBN Co makes investments in the network to ensure it is future-ready to meet the growing digital demands of Australia’s homes and businesses.”

Mr Rue joined NBN Co in July 2014 as Chief Financial Officer, bringing with him a wealth of knowledge in financial management and high-profile company transformation.

Prior to joining NBN Co, Mr Rue spent 17 years in various leadership roles at News Corp Australia, including a decade as Chief Financial Officer.

He also served as a Director on a number of associated boards including Foxtel, Fox Sports, REA Group and Australian Associated Press, as well as chairman of the Community Newspaper Group in Perth and Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club.
